We now come to the heart of this philosophy, the philosophers of existentialism are next. I’d suggest you take a break and/or a long deep breath to clear your mind because it is likely that it will be blown away by their heavy and transforming ideas.
Here we go.
10. The Existentialists
The Existentialists are the ones who are credited with bringing about the Existentialism school of philosophy, the importance of which is difficult to properly understand if you are not or have never been a student of philosophy. For centuries humanity across the world believed in the idea of a Creator of the universe, a God or many gods, and us humans having a predetermined role to play in the grand scheme of things or that a better world awaits us after death. Today these ideas would seem like a matter of individual belief with us not giving too much thought about them if we personally do not subscribe to them. A lot of us still do believe in an essence that precedes our existence, something that lives on even after death, in reincarnation or in the theory of Karma . This is not to say that they are not justified in doing so or that they are deluding themselves, I immensely respect anything and everything that can give meaning to people’s existence and Kierkegaard himself aspired to be religious.
But to get the gravity of this movement you have to understand that up until the mid-eighteenth century or so these ideas were not just a part of mainstream popular belief they were also responsible for holding together civilisations and were even the cause of large scale wars between great empires. A belief in a preceding essence was such a strong and powerful drive for people’s day-to-day existence that the ones who would voice a belief against these ideas were ostracised in most cultures of the world, considered as heretics and in worst cases even sentenced to death. Things started to change with the advent of modernity and with other movements like Renaissance which put the focus back on our human lives and reason, but the belief in God and an afterlife still governed the ideas of even modern rationalist philosophers like Descartes.
What existentialism mainly did was merge the fields of literature and philosophy to put forth ideas which were authentic to how we experience our human existence when we are alive here on earth. The notions of anxiety, angst, despair and absurdity came to be discussed seriously for the first time in philosophy. One can say that for the existentialists, our mental health issues should not be looked at as issues per se that must be eradicated somehow but as a way in which our life is trying to communicate with us. Existentialist thoughts started gaining ground after the first world war, increasingly took centre stage after the second world war and was primarily popularised by Jean-Paul Sartre. The desolation and destruction that humanity saw in these great wars served as the
